3 times the blind is a basic answer. depends on the game stage. If the blinds are 25/50 and you have AA then 3x the blind isnt good enough to stop multi calls. Plus if you want to get paid for your hands sometimes you have to take a risk and limp to play with 4 other players. Poker is a funny game because if you go all in pre-flop with AA someone holding Q10 may call, but if you raise 3x the same player will fold it. There are No answers in poker, thats why it is the best game in the world.
Man had a nightmare in my home game recently went out in 3 hands practically to the same guy including a rebuy … a complete car crash of a game … 1st the bad end of the idiot straight and the guy rivered me, 2nd .. Kings up run into trips 2;s … Rebuy … finally a coin flip all in blinds crazy high … Me King 8 him King 9 …
That’s why I’m more likely to raise with 78 in early position than QJ.
I love poker and I study the game as much as I can, dont get to play as much as I would like but love it all the same. I think the number one requirement to play good poker is discipline. If you know the basics regarding starting hands preflop in early middle and late position you can develop a reasonably solid game with ease, problem is a lot of people me included look down at QJ in Early position and think just once 1/4 of your stack later .. the after thought ..I should have mucked that ..
This is a really good point. What I believe it highlights is that no ONE play should be relied on. Many factors should determine ones style and tactics. Thanks for the refresher!
My only concern with that is perhaps you will be up against a lot more hands with your JJ than a straigh 3 times the blind raise .. I sometimes play 4 times the blind if I am getting flat called too much
Good tip mate
Unless ofcourse you play small ball poker….raising 2 1/2 times the big blind allows you to stretch your bankroll into many more preflop plays.
APL cards
everyone who plays seriously already knows this.
and you should back light urself too.
Very true Rico,if you flop a set and it’s a rainbow flop (no 2 cards on flop are suited for those wondering) and the flop is not connected and giving someone a free card to hit a possible straight then checking can work, but beware there is a risk reward factor to doing this and winning a small pot is better than losing a big pot!
Cheers Stropper
unless you right out hit a set than i would slow play that shit and let your buddie who orginally called your 3X BB raise do all your betting for you!
regardless in most cases after the flop you want to make a continuation bet if you are first to act, most of the time!
QQ raise 3 times the blind
JJ Raise 3 times the Blind
10 Raise 3 times the Blind
99 Raise 3 times the Blind
